Incentives for EV Charges

Forty-five states and the District of Columbia provide an incentive for certain EVs and/or PHEVs charging infrastructure, either through a specific utility operating in the state or through state legislation. The federal government currently offers a tax credit for EV charger hardware and EV charger installation costs. It covers 30% of the costs with a maximum $1,000 credit for residents and $30,000 federal tax credit for commercial installs.

EV Charging Infrastructure Must Grow

The number of EVs on U.S. roads is projected to increase rapidly in this decade. In 2020, about 300,000 EVs were sold, accounting for about 2% of U.S. new automobile market. However, the cumulative number of EVs on U.S. roads could reach 35 million by 2030.

A study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that 3.4 DC fast chargers, and 40 Level 2 240V AC charging ports are needed per 1,000 EVs. Assuming 35 million EVs by 2030, the U.S. will need to build about 50,000 DC fast chargers and 1.2 million Level 2 ports. This means that 380 EV charging ports will need to be installed each day over the next nine years! In comparison, the U.S. has installed on average about 30 ports a day between 2010 and 2020.
